Christmas
in Florida

My
brothers and I (except one) lost our hair in
our thirties and, for about 20 years, we have
had a Christmas tradition we call "The
Bald-off." The brothers present at my mother's
house on Christmas day line up, bend over for
the best view, and have a picture made. The
baldest one wins. My two youngest brothers have
died and a third was absent, so we invited Corinne
to join us this year. Since her hair was coming
back, she insisted that she was the big loser.

Corinne
had loved her trip to Spain, and came back healthier than ever.
She even called me on her last day in Ibiza and asked me to fly
over and join her there for another week. I had promises to keep
with my family in Florida, I had an old dog with me and there was
no way for us to afford it, so Corinne flew home as planned. We
are no longer jetsetters... well, I'm no longer a jetsetter.

| We
played tourist while we were in Florida, visiting one of Orlando's
oldest attractions, Gatorland, where Corinne delighted in talking
with the tropical birds. We spent our time in my hometown taking walks,
photographing hundreds of wintering birds on the lakes, visiting family
and driving by all the places of my childhood. Corinne had never seen
the place where I had spent most of my life. |

| Looking
back at it, our Christmas vacation together seemed to be cancer-free. |
