Doug's Cross-country Adventure

I spent the first week of Corinne's trip to Spain at home, planning to travel east across the country with our aged Cairn terrier, Nick, the week before Christmas. Though we have five dogs, and Nick had never been my preferred traveling companion on my drives across the country, he's an appreciative and gentlemanly little fellow. Also, at more than thirteen years old, I thought this might be his last opportunity to visit his "grandmother" in Florida. He does love to visit.

I rented a car to conserve the miles left on the one we must use for trips to the clinic. Nick and I drove straight through to make the best time - and to be frugal - sleeping together in the back of the rented SUV when I could drive no more. We woke to a beautiful icy dawn near Oklahoma City on the first morning out. The next night, we slept near the Georgia line, waking to this deer grazing in someone's front yard. It was a good trip.

Nick and I spent nearly three days with my daughter in the farmhouse she rents outside Athens, Georgia, where she is in veterinary college.
