In
the hiatus between chemotherapy and the trip
to Spain as Corinne regained her strength
she felt well enough to reconnect with
friends. She visited with "the sisters,"
Eda and Corinna, who were her back door neighbors
(and adopted family) for her first five years
in this country. Devout Catholics, they had
been praying for her daily.
The
sisters' parents, like many of New Mexico's
immigrants in the early part of the last century,
were Italian. While English is their first
language, they speak New Mexican Spanish with
an interesting mix of Italian. Though they
once took a trip to Italy, they have lived
all their lives in the building where they
were born (which sports a "Thank You"
sign from the cast and crew of "Young
Guns," a movie that was filmed here).
They are the hearts of historical Cerrillos,
NM.
We
live less than five miles from the sisters,
but on a somewhat challenging road up the
mountain - much of it dirt. Corinne's cancer
has made scarce her visits to her adopted
family.
