We
learned that various legal proceedings have
determined that cancer, itself, is not a disabling
condition, but chemotherapy is disabling.
Don't we know it!
It
was clear that Corinne wouldn't be able to
do her strenuous job of cooking during chemotherapy.
Linda was unable to work during her treatments
even though she was a legal secretary: far
less physically taxing. We do know some people
who work through chemo, though. I'm not sure
how they do it. Everyone who has been through
this knows about "chemo brain,"
a side effect that impairs short-term memory
and sometimes cripples the ability to process
information.
It
is frightening and humiliating
to lose your ability to think and to remember.
Especially if you have learned to depend on
your thinking ability to get along in life.
One thing that makes all of this bearable
is that the knowledge that the condition will
go away after the chemo treatments stop
at the same time the hair comes back.
And,
sometimes, it's really funny.
