A few days
after the hair came off, we walked down to Sultan's pasture where
he lives with a dozen other horses. Corinne hadn't seen him for
a while and he was wary. A bit standoffish.
Who
was this person? She smelled familiar, but
she didn't look right at all. Finally, Corinne
squatted down and let him make the decision
about coming closer. He did. Once the skittish
Sultan realized this was just his lady with
a weird new haircut (one that looked kind
of like that man she lived with now), everything
was fine.
Corinne's
relationship with Sultan keeps her strong and healthy: both mentally
and physically. During her chemotherapy, she did not feel strong
enough to ride him
often not strong enough to go see him
and care for him. So, she allowed a few other women who visited
the stable to ride him. In normal circumstances, Corinne is extremely
reluctant to permit nearly anyone else to ride her Sultan.
