Examinations

Examination rooms are claustrophobic, and seem always to be windowless. While our clinic has an attractive, well-lighted lobby with an ever-changing exhibit of fine art, the examination rooms rarely have anything on the walls worth looking at with the possible exception of an occasional nice calendar. And, you seem to have to stay in these confined spaces, waiting, for long periods.

We sometimes use our time there to plan our questions and talking points for the doctor. But we usually have time left over after that. So, we
clown around, or we tell each other stories until we wind down. Corinne usually gets depressed before the doctor comes in, so I’m glad that I’m
always there with her. Just to smile at her or to hold her hand. Or to think up another story to tell.

When the doctor finally arrives, Corinne always has a smile for him, and often a witty comment as well. She always makes an effort to make the doctor feel comfortable. Maybe that’s why her doctors like her and remember her.
