On the Land

Corinne became a horsewoman when she lived in Spain. Her horse there had been killed by a lightning strike. Soon after moving here, she found a new horse companion, Sultan. Though I was familiar with horses, she taught me the joy and freedom and spiritual experience of riding in the canyons that surround us here.

We learned to love each other on road trips throughout the stunningly beautiful Southwest United States. It was on these extended trips that we began to believe we could live together. Though she was extremely wary about marriage, I was lonely and, frankly, only knew how to live as a married person. We negotiated a six-month engagement.

Fiercely protective of her freedom and her independence, the prospect of our marriage nearly scared off Corinne more than once.
