Minister of Bop* 2005 |

It
had been nearly a year since I first heard Greg Abate
(pronounced
ah BAH' ti) play in Santa Fe. I had been
listening to one of his CD's and mulling how I could
visually capture his sound, which engulfs you like
a lyrical flash flood. To paraphrase the movie, "Amadeus",
so many notes! When Greg hits his groove, I think
he's no longer with us in the room. He seems to lose
himself and become the music. That's what I attempted
to catch in my camera.

Greg and I spent a couple of hours one windy Sunday
afternoon driving the dusty roads of New Mexico looking
for a fresh good cigar (not a simple task in the rural
west). I had asked him to explain Bebop from a musical
structure point of view. I wanted to be able to differentiate
it from other jazz. I got a seminar, dense and deep.
And, as the lesson came to a close, I got a passionate
sermon about what Bebop means to Greg. That's when
I realized that I was chauffeuring the Minister of
Bop.
